As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me.

Sure, we had a week-long spring vacation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.

For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times return.

Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me-In the spring a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love", as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted-however, it was not spring itself, but the other stuff that got my attention.

In short, I never thought much at all about spring...and then I arrived in China. I had been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.

It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.

I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.

I can't begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system for the millennia that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year. But they did.

24.What did the author think of spring as a child?  A. Eventful.  B. Hopeful. C. Dull. D. Thrilling.

25.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Spring Festival tends to indicate the coming of Spring.

B. Spring to the author is a season when he could do nothing.

C. Empty streets and random bursts of fireworks upset the author.

D.The author never had a spring vacation before he came to China.

26.Whats the author's attitude towards Chinas traditional culture?

A. Doubtful. B. Confused. C. Objective. D. Admirable.

27.What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A. Springtime--a season of waiting        B.Springtime--a season of senses awakening

C. Spring Festival-a time of celebrating    D.Spring Festival-a time of loneliness

The power of modern electronic media-the net, mobile phones and video games to capture the attention of the human mind particularly the young mind and then distract it, has lately become a subject of concern. We are, say the worriers, losing the ability to apply ourselves properly to a single task, like reading a book in its entirety or mastering a piece of music on an instrument with the result that our thinking is becoming shallower.

Nicholas Carr, the American writer, has explored this theme for his new book The Shallows, in which he argues that new media are not just changing our habits but our brain too. It turns out that the mature human brain is not an immutable seat of personality and intellect but a changeable thing, subject toneuroplasticity(神经可塑性). When our activities alter so does the architecture of our brain. I'm not thinking the way I used to think, writes Carr,I feel it most strongly when I'm reading." Years of internet use have, he suspects, dented his ability to read deeply to absorb himself in books:My brain wasn't just drifting. It was hungry. It was demanding to be fed the way the net fed it.He describes getting restless when faced with a long text:When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes hasty reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning.

Carr cites research by Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, who concluded that constant exposure to modern media strengthens new neural pathways while weakening older ones. Just five hours of internet use is enough to awaken previously dormant parts of the brain's prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), concluded Small. For Carr, this is proof that the net can rewire the mind. He sees dangers. Deep thought, the ability to immerse oneself in an area of study, to follow a narrative, to understand an argument and develop an opinion, is giving way to skimming. Young users of the Internet are good at drawing together information for a school project, for example, but that does not mean they have digested it.

28.The underlined worddented" in paragraph 2 means ________
A.strengthened    B.exhausted      C.stimulated        D.damaged

29. In his new book, The Shallows, Nicholas Carr believes that ________

A.five hours of net use can rewire the mind

B.modern electronic media help focus users' attention on the task

C.electronic media have affected his fulfillment of reading books

D.our brain evolves when fed with information and knowledge from the net

30. What can we learn from the passage?

A.The sharper the attention, the sharper the memory.

B.Nicholas Carr's book on the subject is a bestseller.

C.Superficial thinking and learning are associated with the new media.

D.Years of internet use do harm to people's management over multi-tasking.

31.What is the overall danger of the Internet that Carr pointed out in the last paragraph?

A.Young users cannot digest information from the Internet.

B. Using the Internet will cause damage to our prefrontal cortex.

C.Constant internet use will impair our intensive reading ability.

D.The Internet can waste young users'time to an alarming extent.

Several years ago, Jeremy Clarkson, presenter of the famous BBC television programme Top Geardiscovered that one of his guests was half German and half Irish. Immediately, he said:Thats quite a strange combination. It's like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow

This joke played on stereotypes of the Germans as efficient and the Irish as lazy. Many people could understandably be offended by these kinds of claims. We do not know every Irish person, so how can we then conclude that every Irish person is lazy?

I recently read on a website that Irish business people were described as being generally rather casual and more outwardly friendly than many European countries". German business people, on the other hand, are considered to be very direct and according to the website, they do not need a personal relationship in order to do business. Once you hear advice like this, it becomes easier to understand where jokes like the one in the first paragraph come from.

So why do some people disapprove of the kind of stereotypes as seen in Clarkson's joke, but not batting an eyelid (眨眼) when it comes to generalizations. What is the difference between the two?

By definition, a stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. A cultural characteristic, on the other hand, is a pattern of behavior that is typical of a certain group.

So what does this really mean? Stereotype are simply overstated assumptions about groups of people. Imagine if a tourist visited a small town in Switzerland and saw a number of locals playing the alphorn(阿尔卑斯号), and then claimed that Swiss people can play the alphorn. This would be a stereotype! This is an overstated image of the Swiss which is based on one tourist's experience.

If however, this tourist were to say that the Swiss are very punctual, this could be seen as a cultural characteristic. This is because it is a pattern of behavior which is very typical in Switzerland: from their transport system to their business meetings in this way, some people argue that generalizing another culture is not just useful, but important. Politicians always have to be mindful of the cultural characteristics of different countries. By becoming aware of different cultural characteristics, they can avoid causing offence in those cultures.

However, others argue that generalizing cultures will always result in offensive stereotypes. They argue that the best thing we can do is to stop generalizing cultures and start treating people as individuals.

All this raises important questions: can making generalizations about groups of people be a positive thing? Or should we always avoid making broad assumptions about different groups?

32. When he said, it's like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow", Jeremy Clarkson

really meant ________.

A.the stereotypes of the Germans and the Irish are not so good

B.the combination of half German and half Irish is interesting

C. the characteristics of the Germans and the Irish are opposite

D. the Germans will do it perfectly tomorrow while the Irish won't

33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Its typical of the Swiss to be punctual.    B.The Swiss can play the alphorn quite well.

C.The Irish people are considered as lazy, direct and casual.

D.The Germans are thought to be efficient, friendly and direct .

34. Politicians think it important to generalize another culture because ________.

A.they don't want to offend other people   B.generalizing will result in offensive stereotypes

C.cultural characteristics are better than stereotypes

D. they think different cultural characteristics are useful

35. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.

A. illustrate the importance of making generalizations

B. show it is wrong to play jokes on stereotypes of different people

C. tell us the differences between stereotypes and cultural characteristics

D. discuss whether it is good to make generalizations about groups of people

We didn't mean to buy the tools and rent them was expensive. Besides, it really got us annoyed was that we would also collectively create mountains of waste.

Inspiring by tool libraries in the USA and lending libraries in Berlin, we started a small Library of Things local. Up to now we have run five Library of Things site across London.
