A

“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you carry on,one day something good will happen. And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened without that previous disappointment.”

Mother was right,as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer.I hitchhiked(搭便车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got turned down every time.

In one studio,a kind lady told me that big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person.“Go out in the sticks and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said.

So I returned to my hometown—Dixon,Illinois. While there was no radioannouncing jobs in Dixon,my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn’t hired.

My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me.I tried WOC Radio in Davenport,Iowa. The program director named Peter MacArthur told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”

I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling,“What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to broadcast an imaginary game before a microphone. As a result, I did a wonderful job, and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game.

On my way home,as I have many times since,I thought of my mother’s words.I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

Nowadays, many parents are so busy that they seldom have family meals with their children. But this is wrong.

A Harvard study found that families that eat together are twice as likely to eat their five servings of fruit and vegetables a day as families who don’t eat together.Families also eat less fried food when they eat together. Finally, children who regularly eat with family have diets higher in fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamins B6,B12,C and E.

During family meals, parents can set a good example of healthy eating that children may follow. They also display polite table manners.Family meals teach children important skills.

When a family eats together, kids can learn about nutrition and healthy eating. In many studies of school-aged children, those who eat family meals have a higher level of nutrition knowledge.

When a family eats together, kids learn about food safety, like hand washing before eating.

Children who have company(陪伴) at meals are slimmer than those who eat alone. That’s because they eat less, eat more slowly, and talk more. This is a good way to deter obesity(肥胖) in children.

Family meals can help children build vocabulary.Studies showed kids who ate with their family performed better at school and had a broader vocabulary.Family meals offer an opportunity for conversations where kids learn vocabulary—building words to help them read and communicate better.

Children gain a better sense of belonging within the family when they eat together with their parents at home.Family meals offer a time for a family to come together as a group and develop a feeling of belonging. That sense of belonging leads to better self-esteem.

In conclusion, family meals are very important.

Many friendships go through tough times, but a difficult fight may leave your relationship beyond repair. However,if you really care about this person,it will be worth the effort to fix a broken friendship. 1

Be the first one to reach out.If you aren’t talking to each other, someone will have to make the first move.Let it be you this time! 2  You need to try a few different ways to reach them.

3  Explain what you feel is the problem and be honest about it.Then ask them to do the same.Really listen and don’t cut in.This way,you both get to tell your side of the story and get everything out on the table.

Apologize to them and accept their apology.Even if you didn’t do anything and you believe the situation is their fault, opening with an apology sets the tone. You could say,“I’m really sorry that things have gotten to this point. 4  ” If you did something wrong, apologize to them frankly. If they apologize to you, accept their apology kindly.

Take things slowly. If you and your best friend had a major dispute, hanging out every day after school as you used to do probably isn’t the healthiest way to rebuild things. 5  This will give you both time to heal and rebuild your friendship together.

V 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Why is setting goals important? Goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life and goals allow you      1      (make) your life happen.

Successful people imagine how their life should be and set lots of      2      (goal). By      3      (set) goals you are taking control of your life. It’s like having a map to show you where you want to go.

Think of it this way. There     4      (be) two drivers. One has a destination in mind which can      5      (find) on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turnings. The other driver has no goal      6      destination. She starts off at the same time from the same place as      7      first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and follow through on them.      8      (success) people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set, and they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals      9      (real) are. You are the one      10      must decide what to achieve and in which direction to aim your life.
