Xie Zhiyu arrived at the stadium alone as he prepared to make his debut CEHD at the World Atletics Championships in Budapest. It was a busy summer of competition for Xie, who also made his debut at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 and the FISU World University Games in Chengdu.

The 23-year-old hurdler (跨栏运动员) resembles more a backpacking student than a professional athlete. Indeed, he only graduated from Peking University’s School of Journalism and Communication in July, and will continue to pursue his master’s degree at the university’s Department of Physical Education. Balancing training and coursework has proved challenging, but he did it. Similar to his high school days, track time is often limited to between just over an hour and three hours on weekdays.

Xie fell short of qualifying for the men’s 400m hurdles final at the World Athletics Championships. However, this marked the first time in eight years that a Chinese athlete had advanced this far in the event. Although disappointed not to reach the final. Xie stressed that his first world championships were about more than the results. “I’m absorbing, learning and enjoying the competition. It’s been an amazing experience,” he said.

At the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, he secured his first medal at a global champion ship, earning a bronze in the 400m hurdles with a personal best of 48.78 seconds, a mere 0.08 seconds away from qualifying for the Paris Olympics. “It’s been an unforgettable summer of highs and lows,” he reflected. With Paris 2024 within touching distance, he is determined to continue his upward curve on the track. “I will work even harder back home. Hopefully, I can qualify for the Olympics,” he said.

1. What can we learn about Xie?

A. He gained his master’s degree in PE, B. He balanced training and coursework.

2. What does the underlined phrase “fell short of” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Failed in. B. Engaged in. C. Competed in. D. Succeeded in.

3. What is the standard for the men’s 400m hurdles in the Paris Olympics?

A. 48. 62 seconds. B. 48.70 seconds.

C. 48. 78 seconds. D. 48. 86 seconds.

4. which of the following words best describe Xie?

A. Independent and brave. B. Considerate and modest.

C. Confident and outgoing. D. Optimistic and determined.

Balancing training and coursework has proved challenging, but he did it.

However, this marked the first time in eight years that a Chinese athlete had advanced this far in the event. 故选A

At the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, he secured his first medal in global competitions, earning a bronze in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 48.78 seconds, a mere 0.08 seconds away from qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

Xie stressed that his first world championships were about more than the results. “I’m absorbing, learning and enjoying the competition. It’s been an amazing experience,” he said. With Paris 2024 within touching distance, he is determined to continue his upward curve on the track.

75  Habit is behavior you do regularly or routinely. As a professor who studies how to help students become better readers and writers, I can tell that research shows habits have a circle: cue, routine and reward.

Let’s say you have a habit of eating a snack after school. When school is about to end, you start to feel hungry. Dismissal is the cue to get your snack. Eating the snack is the routine. The reward is that it tastes good and your hunger goes away, which reinforces the habit-and makes you want to repeat the circle again the next day. ____1____.

A cue to start studying

Studying at the same time every day is one cue, but you may need something more concrete when first forming your habit. ____2____. This can be a card with the word “study” printed on the front.

An environment for your studying routine

To help yourself study, you need a place set up for work and not for doing other things. Do not study on your bed that’s for sleeping, or in front of the television, or anywhere it’s difficult to hold and use the materials you need. ____3____. Your study place should limit distractions.

____4____

That said, after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little gaming or social media time as your reward. ____5____. Improving your knowledge and skills will give you a sense of achievement and make you more confident and happier at school. But while forming your study habit, a really fun reward will help you stick with it.

A. A reward for studying

B. A set time to study every day

C. The best option is a table or desk with good lighting

D. Here are the things you need to make a studying circle

E. With time, the studying itself will become its own reward

F. Choose a single block of time during the afternoon or evening

G. This can be a calendar reminder you set on your phone or laptop

1~5. DGCAE

A cue to start studyingAn environment for your studying routine(一个适合你日常学习的环境)等可知,后文讲述了学习习惯养成的方法,因此设空句将提及学习习惯等核心词汇。选项DHere are the things you need to make a studying circle(这些是你建立一个学习循环所需要的东西)making a circle即为主题habit,且Here are…

GThis can be a calendar reminder you set on your phone or laptop(这可以是你在手机或笔记本电脑上设置的日历提醒)介绍了日历提醒,符合分析,且在逻辑上与后文This can be a card with the word ‘study’ printed on the front.(这可以是一张正面印有学习字样的卡片。)

Do not study on your bed that’s for sleeping, or in front of the television, or anywhere it’s difficult to hold and use the materials you need.(不要在你睡觉的床上学习,也不要在电视机前学习,也不要在任何难以握住和使用你需要的材料的地方学习。) CThe best option is a table or desk with good lighting(最好的选择是一张有良好照明的桌子或书桌)提到了有良好照明的桌子或书桌,即为适合学习的地方,符合分析。故选C项。

That said, after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little gaming or social media time as your reward.(也就是说,在你完成学习后,你可以给自己一点游戏或社交媒体时间作为奖励。) 选项AA reward for studying(学习的奖励)符合分析。故选A项。

That said, after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little gaming or social media time as your reward.(也就是说,在你完成学习后,你可以给自己一点游戏或社交媒体时间作为奖励。) EWith time, the studying itself will become its own reward(随着时间的推移,学习本身就会成为一种回报)讲到学习本身从长远来看就是奖励,符合分析,且与后文Improving your knowledge and skills will give you a sense of achievement and make you more confident and happier at school.(提高你的知识和技能会给你一种成就感,让你在学校更自信、更快乐。)

Compared

Beat Plastic Pollution

June 5th 2023 marks the 52nd World Environment Day. As students, it is imperative for us to reflect on the profound theme of this year — “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Plastic pollution causes severe damage to our planet. Where there is human activity, there is plastic waste, which is affecting marine life, wildlife, and even human health. Moreover, dealing with plastic waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, worsening the climate crisis.

It’s high time that we took measures to address this issue. Not only should we reduce our plastic consumption, for example, by using cloth shopping bags and steel plates, but we should actively recycle, pick up plastic garbage and promote a culture of responsibility.

What makes a real difference is our daily effort. Let us rise to this challenge and make every day a World Environment Day.
