When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends asked me how I could stand living somewhere so noisy. It's true that there're always some kinds of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.

It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi was the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.

When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, some people chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It's just like the traffic's sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.

Once I got to the park. I picked a bench over near the play area where kids played while their parents sat nearby. I could see and hear almost everything from there. Peoplewatching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there's so much to see and hear in the park!

Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men's conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn't hear the rest, but it must be hilarious because his friend's laugh was so loud.

When I'm old, I hope that I will also have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.

Across the world, studies have consistently found that girls perform significantly better than boys in reading. These studies show that girls typically read more frequently than boys, and have a more positive attitude towards reading.

There are several reasons that help explain these genderbased differences. Parents read more with their daughters. This sends a strong and early message that books are for girls, as well as equipping girls with a significant advantage. Recent research has found even though boys read less frequently than girls, girls still receive more encouragement to read from their parents.

So how can parents and educators help bridge this socially engineered gap for boys' reading?

To improve boys' reading performance, parents and educators may look for ways to connect boys with reading. This has led to discussion about the importance of promoting the socalled boyfriendly books that boys supposedly prefer. These are typically assumed to be nonfiction works, as many people believe that boys prefer to read nonfiction.

But this belief is not supported by recent research, which in fact suggests boys are more likely to choose to read fiction than nonfiction. Encouraging all boys to read nonfiction under the mistaken belief that it is their preference may actually be harmful. Fiction readers read more frequently and demonstrate faster language learning and higher language ability.

Besides encouraging more fiction reading, there are a number of ways that we can help connect boys with books. Firstly, don't assume that boys of the same age have the same interests or that their interests stay the same over time. To match boys with suitable reading material, have regular discussion about reading for pleasure in order to keep up with their interests.

Schools should also provide access to libraries during lessons throughout the years of schooling. Girls visit the library in their free time more than boys, and as students move to higher grades they often have less access to libraries during lessons. Access to books for boys is essential to promote reading.

In addition, we should keep paper books available because research shows that boys are less likely to choose to read on screens than girls. Finally we should promote reading as an enjoyable pastime by being a role model. Let your children or students see you read for pleasure.

32According to the author, what is the main cause of the differences in boys' and girls' reading ability?

ASocial factors.

BTeaching methods.

CPersonal preferences.

DPsychological differences.

33Why does the author recommend that adults regularly talk to boys about reading?

ATo persuade boys to read more often.

BTo learn what boys are most interested in.

CTo help boys improve their language ability.

DTo show that adults are good reading role models.

34When should schools give students additional library access according to the author?

ABefore and after class.

BAt any time of the school day.

CAt regular times during lessons.

DWhen they are in the lower grades.

35What is the main purpose of the text?

ATo show students ways to improve their reading.

BTo explain why boys are not as good at reading as girls.

CTo urge governments to provide more reading resources.

DTo provide strategies that can help improve boys' reading ability.

参考范文:

Dear Jim

How is everything going there?

Recently, I just have finished my science subject which is about Ocean Conservancy. It is said that the ocean is facing unprecedented pollution. Abundant marine resources are being depleted, and artificial waste kills countless ocean lives every year.

There are two main reasons for these problems. First of all, the discharge of untreated industrial wastewater from coastal industries is the main cause of serious pollution of coastal marine water quality. Second, overfishing destroys the marine food chain. Therefore, I think the government should strengthen the supervision of the coastal enterprises and set up the closed season to ensure the fish breeding.
