First, all participants found it quite easy to link colors and emotions. This was particularly true for colors like red, black, or yellow. Other colors, like brown and purple, received fewer associations. We found that colour-emotion associations were not one-to-one, but many-to-many.

Participants did not select one emotion for a colour, but often chose several emotions. In turn, different colors were linked to the same emotion. like pleasure, which was associated with red but also yellow, orange, pink and purple.

What you can also see is that most colors were associated with positive emotions. Only brown, grey and blackthat is, darker colorswere associated with negative emotions. Red was the most controversial colour. For some, it was a very positive colourthe colour of passion, love and desire. For others, it was a negative colourthe colour of danger, anger and hate. For even others, it was both positive and negative. What connects all these emotions and ideas is the fact that red is activating and strong.

Second, we found few cultural differences. In other words, many colour-emotion associations seemed universal. Most participants agreed that pink was associated with love and pleasure, yellow with joy and amusement, or that black was the saddest colour.

Third, if you are interested in cultural differences, we found some specificities too. For example, in addition to the universal associations of love and anger with red, Chinese participants also associated joy and amusement, while Nigerian participants additionally associated fear with red. Another example is the association between purple and sadness that only Greek participants chose. For others, purple was generally a positive colour with very little agreement on the exact emotions associated with purple.

Fourth, participants whose languages were more similar to each other also had more similar associations. To arrive at this finding. we estimated the degree of linguistic (语言的)similarity between two languages, which shows how related or unrelated they are. And then, languages from different language families. like English and Chinese, would have the lowest similarity scores.

24. Which colour is most likely to cause controversy?

A. Black.          B. Red.          C. Yellow.          D. Brown.

25. What is pink associated with according to most participants?

A. Love and pleasure.          B. Joy and amusement.

C. Anger and sadness.          D. Fear and disappointment.

26. Which group of people associate purple with sorrow?

A. Chinese participants.          B. Nigerian participants.

C. Greek participants.            D. English participants.

27. What's the best title of the text?

A. The Deep Meaning of Colours                   B. The Link Between Colours and Emotions

C. Cultural Differences in Different Countries         D. Linguistic Similarity Between Two Languages

Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your creativity or simply give your brain a rest.

Nowadays, in the age of round-the-clock entertainment, it'stechnicallytrickier to be bored. If the show you're watching has lost its spark(火花), you can easily amuse yourself on social media without even leaving the sofa. But that's not necessarily a good thing. Feeling disengaged from the task in hand, or a lack of stimulation, does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of Central Lancashire.

Being bored motivates you to search out something less boring to do. For example, if you decide there's nothing worth watching on TV, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This, according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past two years saw a surge(激增) in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for the first time since childhood.

But what about those times when you have no choice but to stick with the boring situation, waiting for a bus, for instance? The good news is that the boredom you're feeling now could spark your creativity later, says a 2019 study published in the Academy of Management Discoveries journal. People who'd taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative ideas than another group who'd been given something more interesting to do first.

Ultimately, don't take it for granted that there'll always be something close at hand to entertain us. With boredom, we will not run the risk of becoming boring ourselves.

28. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?

A. Wondering mind can be healthy.          B. Social media can surely entertain us.

C. Being bored may be something good.      D. Being involved in the task is beneficial.

29. Why was the surge in creativity seen recently?

A. People were stimulated by boredom.

B. People were better equipped at home.

C. People had more hobbies to choose from.

D. People were more concerned about mental being.

30. What is the purpose of the bean-sorting task in the 2019 study?

A. To create a boring situation.           B. To reduce people's boredom.

C. To make a funny performance.         D. To show an entertainment at hand.

31. What is the best title of the passage?

A. What is the point of creativity?          B. Are we more easily bored nowadays?

C. How can we deal with daily boredom?    D. Does boredom make us more creative?

D

Hidden beneath the surface in the roots of Earths astonishing and diverse plant life, there exists a biological superhighway linking together the members of the plant kingdom in what researchers call the wood wide web.

The network is comprised of thin threads of fungus (真菌)that grow outwards underground up to a few meters from its partnering plant, meaning that all of the plant life within a region likely connected to one another. The partnership is beneficial for both parties involved, plants provide carbohydrates(碳水化合物)to the funguses and in exchange, the funguses aid in gathering water and providing nutrients to its partnering plant.

A study conducted by Rensen Zeng of the South China Agricultural University found that this also allowed for plants to warn one another of potential harm. The study showed Broad Beans used the fungal network to spy on one another for upcoming danger.

Like our Internet, this fungal connectivity is also full of crime. Some plants, such as Golden Marigolds have been found to release poisons into the network to slow down the growth of surrounding plants in the fight for water and light. Other plants, such as the Phantom Orchid, do not have the chlorophyll (叶绿素)and must get the necessary nutrients from surrounding plants.

Research suggests that animals such as insects and worms may be able to detect slight exchanges of nutrients through the network, allowing them to more easily find delicious roots to feed on; however, this has not been conclusively made clear in experimentation. The more we learn about this phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change. Perhaps one day, we may be able to map out these complex networks entirely.

32. What is the function of the first paragraph?

A. To explain the aim of the web.            B. To introduce the main topic.

C. To give definition of diverse life.          D. To show the importance of plants.

33. The criminal behavior of plants can be seen as a way to _______.

A. compete for survival           B. gather more water

C. take in sunlight               D. break natural rules

34. What does the last paragraph suggest?

A. Animals can also feed on the fungus.          B. Nutrient exchanges are too slight to detect.

C. No experiment can prove the phenomenon.     D. More needs to be done to work out the network.

35. Which can be the best title for the text?

A. The Partnership between Plants         B. The Unknown Roots of the Earth

C. The Superhighway Linking the Plants    D. The Mysterious Map Changing the World

Diane Ray was completely self-centred and very spoilt(宠坏的). Her parents gave her everything that she wanted, knowing that she would throw a tantrum(发脾气)if they did not satisfy her desire. She would scream and lie on the floor drumming her heels. Finally her parents always gave in.

That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit. In order to get her parents to buy it for her, she threw a big tantrum. They were back at the beach house, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown when they told her that it was too dangerous to go swimming alone. Dangerous? she said. You just don't want me to have fun. I'm going and if you try to stop me. I'll scream.

What are you doing? a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was here until he spoke.

I'm going to swim, she answered coldly.

You shouldn't swim today, the man advised. There is a storm coming up.

You should mind your own business! Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.

If you go out there you'll be sorry, the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.
