(2019·安徽江淮名校期中)Peggy Whitson's job demands a daily twohour workout in a gym where weight has no meaning and the view changes at 17,000 miles an hour.
Whitson makes it look easy. At 57, she is the oldest woman to fly in space, breaking the record last November when she began her third longterm stay at the International Space Station. After returning home in September, 2017, the NASA astronaut felt matteroffact about the age milestone(里程碑).
“It wasn't a record I was seeking for,”Whitson said.“I was 42 and 48 for my first two space flights. I feel lucky that I was able to get to do another one in my 50s. I don't think people should let age discourage them, even on those jobs that require some amount of physical fitness. The oldest man is John Glenn (at 77), and we've had male astronauts in their 60s before, so it's just a matter of time before women start flying in space at this age”.
On the earth, she stays fit by weightlifting, biking, playing basketball and water skiing. She shared what it's like to live in microgravity:“It's like you're in a swimming pool, but you don't have to worry about breathing. If I push off from one side, I'm going to float to the other side.Every direction feels exactly the same, which is really hard for your brain to grasp, but it's amazing how fast you adapt.
It's a big shock for the body to come back to Earth—everything is so heavy. We spend a lot of time getting used to being back in gravity again. Back pain was really the most dramatic for me this time. For me, coming home is harder than going up into space.”

Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That's right― during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin.
But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them. "Running at an amazing pace," Cassidy told Runner's World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!"
At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot(赃物)in a backyard.
No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they'd seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site—and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush ... and right into the arms of campus police, who'd joined the chase shortly behind the runners.
The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. “Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,” Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”

C.the campus police on patrol D.the joint efforts of the people
7.Which of the following best describes Cassidy?
A.Athletic and generous. B.Courageous and ambitious.
C.Helpful and humorous. D.Thoughtful and demanding.

Blowing bubbles is fun! The best thing about bubbles is that it's easy to make your own bubble solution (溶液). You can make as much as you want and blow as many bubbles as you'd like.If you add a “secret” ingredient(配料),you'll get bigger and stronger bubbles! Do just as follows:
Measure 6 cups of water into one container, then pour 1 cup of dish soap into the water and slowly stir it until the soap is mixed in. Try not to let bubbles from while you stir.
Measure 1 tablespoon of glycerin(甘油) or 1/4 cup of corn syrup(玉米糖浆) and add it to the container. Stir the solution until it is mixed together.
You can use the solution right away, but to make even better bubbles, put the lid on the container and let your super bubble solution sit overnight. The soap mixture on the outside of a bubble is actually made of three very thin layers: soap, water, and another layer of soap. A bubble pops when the water that is trapped between the layers of soap evaporates (蒸发). The glycerin or corn syrup mixes with the soap to make it thicker. The thicker skin of the bubbles keeps the water from evaporating as quickly,so they last longer. It also makes them stronger,so you can blow bigger bubbles.
Dip a bubble wand or straw into the mixture, slowly pull it out, wait a few seconds, and then blow. If you don't have a readymade “bubble wand”, you can make your own by cutting off the end of the bulb of a plastic pipet.Dip the cut end in solution and blow through the narrow end.You can also make a loop out of thin wire or pipe cleaner. Just twist a round end on your wire to blow the bubbles through. You can even make it heartshaped, square or use other shapes if you're clever enough to bend it well.
【语篇解读】 文章主要讲述了如何吹出更大的泡泡。

10.What does the secret in making bigger and stronger bubbles lie in?

C.The water. D.The straw.
11. What can you use a bubble wand to do?
A.Blow bubbles. B.Mix the solution.
C.Measure soap. D.Shape wires.
12.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A.More soap,more bubbles.
B.Less water,better bubbles.
C.Stronger skin,more bubbles.
D.Thicker layers, bigger bubbles.

My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. Our grandchildren were excited about the attraction where they can drive the cars. Since our party was uneven in numbers and two people fit in each car, I sat out that one and headed down to take pictures of them.
As I waited for them to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who looked to be about 7. They rolled down the hill, and then as they neared where I sat, the car shook a few times and then stopped.
The young driver looked frightened, “I can't do it.”
His father quietly said, “Yes, you can.”
“No, I can't!”
“Yes, you can.”
The little boy was almost in tears, “I CAN'T!”
With deep patience, the father said, “Son, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”
Then he talked him through starting the car. And moments later with the father helping his son, the two went smoothly on their way down the track.
The scene brought tears to my eyes because I couldn't imagine how many times my father had to do that with me.Every time things got hard or when I had failures along the way, I'd say, “I can't do it.” He'd reply, “You can.” Time and time again he patiently encouraged me on the journey. And just like that little boy's dad, my sweet father would say, “Michelle, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”
That's where the true strength comes in. I can't do things under my own power, but when my father comes beside me and provides wisdom (智慧) and strength, there's no way I can fail.

Communication Tips
Here are some suggestions about making your talk with your parents turn out for the best.
Be honest.
If you're always honest, your parents will be likely to believe what you say. If you sometimes hide the truth, parents will have a harder time to believe what you tell them. 16

It's easy to say “Hi, Mum” or “Dad, can you pass the potatoes?” 17 Let's face it. It's OK to go ahead and share what's on your mind.
18
If you have a disagreement, can you consider things from your parents' points of view? If you can, telling your parents you understand their views and feelings helps them be willing to understand yours, too.
Try not to argue.
Using a friendly and respectful tone makes your parents more likely to listen to you and take what you say seriously. 19
What if it doesn't work? If you still can't talk to your parents, seek other adults' help. 20 Then follow all the tips above to make you communicate with that person well.
A.Explain your situation.
B.Try to understand them.
C.If you lie, they'll find it hard to trust you.
D.Parents are the most important people in your life.
E.But it can be harder to start talking about personal topics.

I should have been born with my fingers permanently glued to a keyboard.Since I was five, I've known that I want to be a professional writer: a journalist, a novelist, a modernday Shakespeare, maybe. In my freshman year I tried to figure out what A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar were about. Macbeth was much easier to understand in my sophomore year (大二年级).
However, I'm practically addicted to books, whether I'm reading or writing them. I can't go a single day without writing something.I have made it a rule to pick up a pen and just let my thoughts out every day.
I can be inspired by anything: an expression, a song and a movie.Once I get inspired, it's like the wheels turning faster and faster as I think out one possible story after another.
My family is so widespread that whenever I meet with a cousin or an aunt I only vaguely (模糊地) remember; I tell him or her I'm a writer because I know it will distinguish me from all the other kids in the family and make me memorable.I told my relatives about the stories I used to write as a child, the projects I'm working on now, and why I'm working so hard to make a breakthrough in the competitive world of publishing. One aunt hugged me and told me,“Just don't forget about the rest of us when you become the next J. K. Rowling.”
Smiling, I replied, “Don't worry, I won't.” I am confident that I will become the next J. K. Rowling.I have the ambition, the means, and the talent. My English and history teachers don't praise my writing and tell me I have an innate (与生俱来的) writing talent even though they know how passionate I am about writing, and how that passion slips through my fingertips to the paper.

I don't really know why I love writing so much.__________________________
